Arrhythmia – Johan Engdahl's research group

The research group studies atrial fibrillation and arrhythmia detection. They explore ways to prevent complications through heart rhythm screening of risk groups, such as the elderly, stroke patients, and those undergoing cardiac intervention. The group examines how the disease manifests in the atrium and its connection to symptoms. A longitudinal project follows the disease progression in individuals under 50. For arrhythmia detection, they study heart rhythm diagnosis using mobile phones.

Arrhythmia

We primarily work within two areas: atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias.

  1. We study screening for atrial fibrillation as a method to prevent ischaemic stroke.
  2. The prognostic significance of ventricular extrasystoles in otherwise healthy individuals is investigated.
  3. We examine awareness of current international guidelines regarding treatment with implantable defibrillators (ICD) and how these should be implemented to avoid serious complications.
