Neuroepidemiology – Kyla McKay and Katarina Fink's research group

Our mission is to advance knowledge on the causes and consequences of neuroinflammatory disorders and to improve the quality of life for individuals living with these chronic conditions. Our primary focus is on multiple sclerosis, but we also conduct research into myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), narcolepsy, and epilepsy.

Our Research

We leverage nationwide linked health administrative and disease-specific clinical registries to apply innovative epidemiological methods to characterize chronic neuroinflammatory diseases. Our team consists of an international group of experts, including epidemiologists and clinician-scientists, all dedicated to understanding and combating neuroinflammatory diseases.

Our specific objectives include:

  • Disease surveillance: Monitoring the incidence and prevalence and temporal trends of neuroinflammatory conditions,

  • Risk factor identification: Uncovering factors that influence disease onset and progression,

  • Optimizing treatment strategies: Advancing personalized medicine approaches to enhance safety and effectiveness of therapeutic interventions,

  • Pregnancy: Investigating factors affecting pregnancy and neonatal outcomes in neuroinflammatory conditions and monitoring the impact of treatments,

  • Post-approval safety studies: Long-term study of adverse outcomes associated with novel disease-modifying therapies for multiple sclerosis .
