Our mission
Every year, around 60 people die from hypothermia and around 200 from drowning, whilst a further 400 and 200 respectively are treated for serious injuries – sometimes with lasting brain damage.
Our mission is to develop an evidence-based knowledge base that strengthens water safety nationwide, prevents accidents and improves emergency response so that more people survive and can return to a life with a good quality of life. Through research, collaboration and the dissemination of preventive strategies, the Centre for Drowning Research (CDR) helps to reduce the number of people injured or killed in Sweden each year.
Our goal
The aim of the Centre for Drowning Research is clear: to see a sustained downward trend in the number of people who die or are injured as a result of drowning each year. Our aim is to reduce preventable fatal drowning incidents by 25 per cent by 2036. In concrete terms, we are aiming for a reduction from 110 deaths in 2025 to a maximum of 77 cases by 2036.
