Medical Education and Implementation – Anna Kiessling's research group

Our research in medical pedagogy emphasizes professional and interprofessional learning in healthcare with a focus on complex clinical decision-making. The quality and accuracy of decisions are often crucial for medical outcomes in the short and long term. Our goal is to understand the barriers and opportunities for effective learning of complex decision-making in the acute care context. We use quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods as well as megavariate statistical methods.

What is medical pedagogical research?

Medical pedagogical science is an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that draws upon explanatory models and perspectives from medicine, nursing science, and behavioural science—particularly pedagogy, but also psychology, sociology, and social anthropology. Within the research area of medical pedagogy, learning processes, conditions for learning, and professional development within healthcare are investigated. Research in medical pedagogy covers both individual and system levels, within academia as well as health and medical care. Research questions address both formal education and workplace learning. Qualitative and quantitative research approaches are used depending on the nature of the research. Despite its name, the research encompasses learning not only in the medical profession but within all health professions.

Applied in our clinical context, the application of findings in practice is of great importance. Therefore, we also apply principles from implementation research.
