Mikael Rydén & Niklas Mejhert lab

Our laboratory investigates adipocyte biology across multiple levels of complexity, from human clinical studies including analyses of adipose tissue biopsies to molecular mechanisms in isolated fat cells. This integrated approach enables us to understand how adipocytes support metabolic health and how their dysfunction contributes to metabolic disease.

Our research

Our research is centered on a close interaction between clinical and experimental studies of human adipose tissue. Clinical investigations are conducted through our research center at Karolinska University Hospital, where we examine adipose tissue function in well characterized patient cohorts and obtain primary adipose tissue samples.

In parallel, mechanistic studies are carried out in our laboratory at Biomedicum, where we use advanced systems and cell biology approaches to dissect signaling pathways, metabolic regulation, and inflammatory processes in human adipocytes.

By integrating these complementary research environments, we translate observations from human physiology into detailed mechanistic insight and place molecular findings in a clinically relevant context.
