Psychiatric epidemiology – Paul Lichtenstein's research group

We study causes, consequences and comorbidities for psychiatric conditions primarily among children and adolescents. We combine national health data with clinical data, use advanced family and twin design, and have large national and international collaborations.

Sketch of the Wargentin building, KI Campus Solna

The work in my group is primarily concerned with using genetically informative samples (twins, families) to understand genetic and environmental influences on both health and behavior. The studies are usually based on the Swedish Twin Registry (comprising more than 200 000 twins) and other Swedish Registries such as the Multi-Generational Register (comprising all individuals born in Sweden since 1931).

My group performs quantitative genetic studies - that is, evaluate the relative importance of genes and environments for a phenotype - and "cotwin-control"-studies, where the importance of an exposure is evaluated after controlling for genetic predisposition for the disease. The research is interdisciplinary and includes, among others, medical, genetic, epidemiological, sociological and psychological research questions.

Causes and consequences of criminality and psychiatric disorders

The database with genetically informative psychiatric data from the entire Swedish population is very complex, and we have developed new statistical models to analyze causality and to understand how genes and environments influence intergenerational transmission. Using these methods we have shown that smoking during pregnancy is not causally related to offspring criminality and school achievements, that there is a common genetic etiology between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and that ADHD medication seems to be protective against criminality, traffic accidents, and drug abuse.

At least 41 completed and 16 ongoing PhD theses and 230 papers have been published based on our family study.

Twin Study of Child and Adolescent Development - TCHAD

A paper that describes the study was published in 2007 (Lichtenstein, Tuvblad, Larsson, Carlström, 2007, Twin Research and Human Genetics). At least 15 PhD theses and more than 80 papers/reports have been published based on data from this study.

Project description

We have studied how genetic and environmental effects contribute to the development of mental health problems over time. For example, we have identified persistent “combined” and subtype-specific genetic influences (i.e., “hyperactive-impulsive” and “inattentive”) suggesting a genetic basis for the DSM-IV classification of ADHD (Larsson, Lichtenstein et al. 2006) and that genetic effects are more stable for ADHD (Chang, Lichtenstein et al. 2013) compared to internalizing problems (e.g., fears, anxiety) (Kendler, Gardner et al. 2008).

With the large population-based sample of twins, followed prospectively from childhood to emerging adulthood, the study is unique also in an international perspective. The data include a broad spectrum of measures of environments as well as internalizing and externalizing problems behaviors from both twins and parents. The study is designed to address the interplay between genes and environments, comorbidity, and the development into adult psychopathology. We will continue our studies of antisocial behavior, ADHD, eating problems, fears and phobias, and relationships.
