Center for Clinical Metabolic Research in Diabetes
The center is a unit for outpatient investigations of human subjects using established as well as novel types of techniques.
The center is located in new facilities in the C2-building of the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge where it is integrated with the outpatient clinic of the Endocrinology and Diabetology unit. This ensures a close interaction with the clinical activities and access to diabetic subjects for clinical studies. At the moment the center has eight affiliated senior medical doctors performing the clinical studies and employs two research nurses and two technicians. We perform clinical metabolic assessments including standard anthropometric measurements and analyses of plasma/blood (routine clinical chemistry as well as measurements of selected metabolites and/or proteins), bioimpedance for measures of lean body/fat mass, dual x-ray absorptiometry (for body composition and fat mass distribution), arterial stiffness/24 h blood pressure measurements, continuous glucose monitoring (Freestyle Libre/Dexcom/CGM), oral/i.v., glucose/i.v., insulin tolerance tests, hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamps, indirect calorimetry, subcutaneous fat tissue/muscle biopsies and 24 h metabolic profiles (of hormones/metabolites). Altogether, these techniques allow us to carefully phenotype individuals with regard to body composition and risk factors for diabetes and associated cardiovascular complications, including insulin resistance.
