Researchers and academic life
Karolinska Institutet employs approximately 3,000 researchers, including around 420 full professors. The university hosts more than 2,200 doctoral students. Moreover, the university has many affiliated researchers, such as clinically active researchers or visiting scholars. A large number of our researchers come from countries other than Sweden, and the working language in many research groups is English.

They work with highly specialised equipment for facilities that they have often built up themselves. Although not themselves researchers, their expertise, experience and international contacts render them indispensable for research at KI. A year ago, new titles were created for this important category of employee.

A new donation professorship in prevention is being established at Karolinska Institutet. It will be named Prince Daniel's Professorship in Cardiovascular Prevention and will be awarded to researcher and obstetrician Ylva Trolle Lagerros. The aim is to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Sweden.

KI researcher Pauliina Damdimopoulou is currently experiencing a lot of activity. At the end of April this year, she was appointed ERC ambassador — and just a few days later, she became a professor of reproductive biology. Now she looks forward to building new collaborations to strengthen research on women's and children's health.

Karolinska Institutet's recruitment and consolidation program for junior researchers is an initiative to recruit and support outstanding young research leaders. In February 2025, the research committee at KI decided on eight assistant professor positions and nine consolidation grants for researchers already employed at the university.

CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment) is led by a number of EU organizations with the aim of advancing how research is assessed in order to maximise its quality, transparency and impact. KI has now signed the agreement together with a number of other Swedish universities.
