What did you study as an undergraduate (bachelor)?

I completed my Bachelor of Medicine (M.D.) at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China. From high school, I had a strong desire to become a doctor so that I could help people and make a meaningful impact on their lives.

Why did you choose the Master programme in Toxicology?

After five years of medical studies, I realized that my understanding of drug use and medication in clinical practice was still limited. I wanted to explore other fields that investigate drugs, particularly in terms of their safety and toxicity evaluation. This led me to pursue a Master's in Toxicology.

Where did you conduct your MSc thesis and what was it about?

I conducted my Master’s thesis at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) at KI under the supervision of Dr. Vesna Munic Kos. My project focused on investigating the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals using an in vitro model of skeletal muscle. The aim was to understand their contribution to the development of metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

Looking back on your time at KI and the Master programme in Toxicology, what is the most valuable thing that you learned?

Reflecting on my master's program, those two incredible years allowed me to learn extensively and gain diverse experiences. The most valuable skills I gained were creative and critical thinking. The program involved numerous case studies and even visits to RISE and JRC, which broadened my perspective on toxicology research. These skills have continued to be invaluable in my PhD studies and will also be beneficial in my future career.

Where are you and what are you doing now?

Currently, I am a PhD student in the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at KI. My research focuses on ribosome biogenesis and specialization in skeletal muscle physiology and pathology.

What made you decide on this career?

During my master’s thesis, I discovered my passion for research and lab work. I love the process of uncovering new findings that could contribute to global health.
