PhD students at MEB

Here you find information both for our doctoral students at MEB and about them.

The PhD student group includes all registered and soon-to-be registered PhD students at the department. There are usually around 70 registered PhD students at MEB. What do we do in the PhD group? Here is some information that may be useful to know.

Data Management

PhD students at KI are expected to uphold high ethical standards in their research, including maintaining rigorous and organized data management practices throughout their projects. New students should schedule an introductory meeting with Mariam Lashkariani, followed by annual follow-up meetings to stay aligned with best practices. Additionally, all MEB PhD students are required to complete the "Good Data Management Practice in Epidemiological Research" course. More information can be found here.

Doctoral Students’ Association (DSA)

The Doctoral Students' Association (DSA), part of Medicinska Föreningen (MF), is the representative body for PhD students at KI. It offers support in various areas, including social and educational activities, student engagement, scientific development, and mentorship. It also provides access to the ombudsperson for special support. All MEB PhD students are encouraged to join the DSA.

PhD meetings

The PhD student group meets approximately twice per semester. All PhD students are encouraged to attend the meeting and we usually invite other MEB members interested in our activities.

During the meeting we discuss important issues related to the PhD studies and activities at KI or MEB:

  • receive updates from the meetings with the epidemiology steering committee and the Department council
  • discuss the organization of postgraduate courses
  • elect new members of the PhD group board
  • propose new activities for the PhD group and inform the students on upcoming events

Seminars (ISP, half-time & pre-dissertation seminars)

If you are planning to have your ISP, half-time or pre-dissertation seminar, please contact the education administrator Alessandra.Nanni@ki.se to check for available dates and to book a time. Please contact the education administrator at least 1 month in advance. Alessandra can also help you check that all documents are in order before you apply to defend your thesis and she will assist you in getting signatures in the right order.

Student seminars (free-topic seminars for all students)

The student seminars are meant to cover different aspects of the scientific research and can be presented by either a PhD student or and internal/external speaker. Moreover, PhD students can get 1.5 credits after attending 5 seminars and presenting to 1 seminar.

If you are planning a student seminar, please contact seminar coordinators Yuying.Li@ki.se or Ziyan.Ma@ki.se to check for available dates and book a day.

PhD retreat

Since 2007, the MEB PhD group has arranged an annual one-day PhD retreat. The event is organized as a combination of lectures and social activities, including a lunch and/or dinner sponsored by the department. All current or soon-to-be PhD students are invited.

PhD Group Board

Group chairs

The MEB PhD Students’ Chairs, elected annually by MF, act as liaisons between PhD students and MEB administrators. They support the PhD Students’ Board, organize student meetings, represent PhD students at MEB committees, and ensure that students stay informed about KI developments affecting PhD programs. This role is elected through the DSA.

PhD Seminar Coordinators

PhD Seminar Coordinators organize twice-monthly seminars where students can explore a wide range of topics relevant to their academic and professional development. MEB students are expected to attend and present at these seminars to earn required credits. For help with attendance or presentation certificates, contact the seminar coordinators.

Fadder coordinators

Starting a PhD can be both exciting and challenging. The Fadder Coordinators at MEB help pair new PhD students with a more experienced "fadder" (buddy), who will assist them in settling into MEB and navigating their first steps.
