Division of Renal Medicine

Slow deterioration of renal function may be a ticking bomb of future ill health. Since it is estimated that about ten percent of the population has evidence of renal disease, it is likely to become the disease of the future.

The division conducts experimental and patient-oriented clinical research based on clinically relevant problems.

The work is conducted in close collaboration with the Renal Medicine Clinic at Karolinska University Hospital, Baxter Novum, laboratories at Neo, Campus South and with several national and international universities.

The division is involved in teaching at the medical school during semesters 5 to 7 and in the teaching and supervision of post-doctoral students.

Research and postgraduate activity is high with about 60-70 new scientific articles per year, and 1-2 completed PhD degrees per year and currently over 10 registered PhD students.

Research

The most active research areas concern vascular ageing with calcification and the role of malnutrition and/or inflammation in chronic renal failure and dialysis treatment. In addition, epidemiological projects are ongoing as well as studies on kidney biopsies, endothelial dysfunction, uraemic toxicity, genetics and epigenetics, bone disease, inflammatory kidney diseases and vasculitides.

We also carry out biomimetic research (to learn from ingenious solutions developed in nature during evolution), nutritional research in the field of ‘Food as Medicine’ and studies on the role of sex/gender in the risk factor profile of chronic kidney disease. Several members of the division work in the field of ‘Planetary Health’.
