Bengt Lindholm

Bengt Lindholm, MD, PhD, Associate Professor and Senior Research Specialist, is a nephrologist who introduced continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treatment in Sweden 1978 while working in the department of renal medicine at St Eriks Hospital, Stockholm, under the supervision of Prof. Jonas Bergström. From 1980 he worked at Department of Nephrology, Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge serving as its head 1990–1992. He became Associate Professor, Karolinska Institutet, in 1989.   He was employed as Director Scientific Affairs Europe Baxter Healthcare´s Renal Division 1993 – 2022 and as Adjunct Professor Renal Medicine at Clintec 2007-2019. From 1995 he has been the head of Renal Research Novum, a section of Renal Medicine at Clintec, where he collaborates with many visiting researchers from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. His research focuses on metabolism and nutrition in chronic kidney disease (CKD), peritoneal dialysis (especially peritoneal transport of solutes and fluid), and factors influencing clinical outcomes in CKD and dialysis patients such as malnutrition, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease.

Bengt Lindholms research focuses on renal medicine, chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, its complications such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic alterations, malnutrition and inflammation, and its treatment including dialysis therapies, especially peritoneal dialysis. He has authored 815 publications including 30 book chapters (June 13, 2026). According to Google Scholar cited 62347 times and Hirsch index 122

Bengt Lindholm has been main supervisor (n=11) or co-supervisor (n=10) of 21 completed PhD graduations at Karolinska Institutet 1990-2021. He has been the reviewer of 29 PhD dissertations as Graduate Thesis Review Committee Member/Opponent 1989-2026 in Sweden and abroad. Supervisor of >50 post doc researchers from Europe, Latin America, and Asia for periods of 1-4 years 1993-2026.  Invited speaker to more than 400 international conferences, symposia and university meetings.
