Method to stop bleeding could lead to more people surviving gun violence
Research at Karolinska Institutet could lead to more people surviving gun violence. The research, which is done together with the Swedish Armed Forces and NATO, will provide answers on how to stop severe bleeding.
In an interview in P4 Stockholm (Sveriges Radio), Mattias Günther, explains: "One of the methods being investigated is to insert a balloon, a kind of catheter, into the aorta at the height of the thorax, in order to stop the bleeding. It is a fairly advanced and dramatic method but it can be life-saving in some situations if you are dying of severe bleeding such as a blasted leg or similar."
