Tiotandvård (ten-tooth care) for those aged 67 or older
From 1 January 2026, a new state dental care subsidy will be introduced in Sweden – tiotandvård (ten-tooth care). Tiotandvård means that if you are 67 or older, you pay 10 per cent of the cost of certain treatments – the state covers the remaining 90 per cent. Tiotandvård applies at our clinics Lärarkliniken and Specialistkliniken.

Who is eligible for tiotandvård?
The reform applies to those aged 67 or older who receive treatment under the state dental care subsidy.
Treatments included
Tiotandvård applies to treatments at Lärarkliniken and Specialistkliniken that involve disease, injury or repair of teeth.
For example
- Filling cavities (caries)
- Treatment of loose teeth
- Dental crowns, bridges or implants in front teeth and teeth up to tooth number five in the mouth
- The goal is for you to be able to eat, talk and smile without problems – for the rest of your life.
Treatments not included
Some treatments are not covered by tiotandvård for example:
- Examinations and preventive dental care (cleaning, tartar removal, check-ups)
- Cosmetic dental care (for appearance)
- Treatments further back in the mouth (teeth numbers 6–8)
- If you are unsure about what applies to your particular treatment, we will be happy to help you sort it out.

Which teeth are included in the tiotandvård scheme?
The tiotandvård scheme applies to treatments on teeth 1 to 5, i.e. the front teeth up to the first two molars. For the back teeth (teeth 6, 7 and 8), the current high-cost protection continues to apply.

Other dental care subsidies that also apply
In addition to tiotandvård, there are other subsidies that can help you pay:
General dental care subsidy (ATB): 600 SEK per year. You can save the subsidy for up to 3 years.
Special dental care subsidy (STB): 1000 SEK per half-year. You can save it for 1 year.

Our advice to you as a patient at Lärarkliniken or Specialistkliniken
Even though tiotandvård will not come into effect until 2026, examinations and preventive care are not included. This means that the price for these visits is the same regardless of whether you come in the autumn or after the turn of the year. Book your examination as soon as possible if you have any discomfort or pain. The dentist can then tell you about your current dental status, draw up a treatment plan and let you know if you need dental care that should not be postponed. Some conditions can pose a risk to your health if you postpone treatment, and it can also reduce the chances of successful treatment. In addition, you will then be ready to start any treatment immediately in January.
At Universitetstandvården, you will always receive clear information about costs, reimbursements and what support is available to you. We are here to help you take care of your oral health – both now and in the future.

Free dental care if you are a student's patient
If you are over 67 years of age and are a student's patient, you pay nothing – because you are helping to train the dental professionals of the future. This dental care is completely free of charge and applies to all teeth and treatments.

Questions and answers about tiotandvård (ten-tooth care)
From 1 January 2026.
Everyone who has reached the age of 67 and is registered in the Swedish insurance system.
You pay 10% of the reference price for the treatments covered. The state covers the remaining cost. The reimbursement is automatically registered via the Försäkringskassan (Swedish Social Insurance Agency) when you visit us. Tiotandvård applies at the Lärarkliniken and the Specialistklinken.
The idea is to strengthen public support for dental care for the elderly.
It is the Lärarkliniken and Specialistkliniken here at the Universitetstandvården that will be covered by the tiotandvård scheme.
If you are over 67 years of age and are a patient of a student, you pay nothing – because you are helping to train the dental professionals of the future. All dental care provided today meets high aesthetic standards. However, there are treatments that are considered cosmetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers and ‘invisible braces’. These are not included in dental care support.
Your dentist at Lärarkliniken and Specialistkliniken will help you see what is included in ten-tooth care and what is still covered by the current high-cost protection.
If you are 67 years of age or older, dental care is completely free of charge and covers all teeth and all treatments. Since you are helping to train the dental professionals of the future, we want you to feel rewarded.
Before you can be registered with one of our students, one of our teachers must assess whether your treatment needs are suitable for educational care. The need for patients varies from term to term.

If you have acute problems, you should seek dental care immediately. Do not wait!
If you are only planning an examination, you can do so before 1 January 2026, as the cost of examinations is not affected by the reform.
Therefore, book your examination at the Lärarkliniken or Specialistkliniken now. The dentist can then tell you about your current dental status, make a treatment plan and tell you if you can wait until 1 January 2026. Some conditions can pose a risk to your health if you postpone treatment, and it can also reduce the chances of successful treatment.
No, not all teeth are covered by tiotandvård. It covers prosthetic treatments on the five front teeth positions in the upper and lower jaw.
Teeth positions 6, 7 and 8 are not covered by tiotandvård for tooth and implant-supported crowns and bridges. The previous regulations apply here.
Counting starts from the front teeth in the middle and goes backwards. Positions 1–5 therefore cover the front teeth, canine teeth and the first two molars.
Tooth positions 6, 7 and 8 are not covered by tiotandvård for tooth- and implant-supported crowns and bridges.
If you are 67 or older, your ATB is 600 Swedish kronor per year. With tiotandvård, you will be able to save your ATB for three years instead of two as previously.
Yes, your STB will be increased from 600 Swedish kronor per six months to 1,000 Swedish kronor per six months.
If you are aged 20 or over and registered with the Swedish insurance system, you will automatically receive 300 or 600 Swedish kronor per year in ATB. This can be saved for up to two years.
You will receive STB if you have a diagnosis determined by the National Board of Health and Welfare. Your doctor and dentist can help you find out if you are entitled to STB.
With STB, you receive 600 Swedish kronor per six months, which you can use for examinations and preventive dental care. STB can be saved for six months.
According to the tiotandvård proposal, if you turn 67 in 2026, or are already older, you will only pay 10 per cent of the reference price for the treatments included in ten-tooth care. Please note that tiotandvård does not cover all treatments.
An examination at the Lärarkliniken and Specialistkliniken will not be covered by the tiotandvård scheme, and the price will remain the same as it is today. You can still use the dental care allowance (ATB) as a discount when paying for the examination.
No. If you are registered in the Försäkringskassan (Swedish insurance system), the compensation is automatically activated when you receive treatment from us.
The emergency treatment itself is covered. However, emergency examinations/investigations or X-rays taken in connection with the emergency visit are not covered; the current compensation rules apply in these cases.
The compensation applies to teeth in positions 1–5. For teeth further back, the old rules apply, where you can receive compensation from your home insurance in the event of an accident, depending on the terms of your agreement.
No, the free healthcare card does not affect this.
The reference price is set by the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV) and is used by Försäkringskassan to calculate the support. You always pay 10 per cent of the reference price if you are over 67 years of age when tiotandvård is introduced.
The Riksdag has proposed that the enhanced high-cost protection, tiotandvård, be introduced on 1 January 2026. The Riksdag is expected to make a decision on the proposal in autumn 2025.
