Centre for Health Crises
The Centre for Health Crises mobilises and coordinates interdisciplinary expertise and know-how in health crises. Our vision is a society better prepared for future health crises. We want to build the next generation of health crisis experts through research, education, and collaboration. We work based on an all-hazards perspective, focusing on both health threats and vulnerabilities.
Areas of expertise
Our definition of a health crisis is a hazardous disruption that causes significant effects on human health and that risks exceeding the health system’s ability to cope with it. Based on this definition, we gather skills and knowledge in a number of areas of expertise. They cover a range of subjects that relate to both hazardous disruptions/health threats and health system vulnerabilities.
Workplan
Our work and activities are interdisciplinary and span across questions related to the prevention, preparedness, management, and evaluation of health crises. Our activities are guided by five strategic goals that focus on education, research, expert dissemination, and policy work, as well as our internal role at KI. Moreover, during the period 2024-2026, we have chosen to structure our work around a number of focus areas.
Education, networks and collaborations
At the Centre for Health Crises we develop and run a number of courses and exercises within the field of health crises. We are also the coordinating node for the Health Crisis Network at Swedish universities. The network collaborates on common questions and interests. It can also be activated when a health crisis occurs, to make expertise available. In addition, we collaborate with national and international organisations, among other things to second expertise to ongoing health crises.
Organisation
Our vision is a society better prepared for future health crises. Our mission is to build the next generation of health crisis experts, through research, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our organisation is built around a group of core staff and a group of expert coordinators. We have a steering group with representatives from both KI and other universities. We report directly to the KI President.

Health Crises Forum 2024
Sweden is facing major changes and challenges in order to improve preparedness for future health crises. Universities can be a valuable resource in these efforts, as well as in their role as part of Total Defence (Totalförsvaret). On 27 November 2024, the Centre for Health Crises will be welcoming participants to Sweden's first Health Crises Forum. The aim of the forum is to bring people together to discuss what universities can do in a health crisis and how they can support the surrounding community.
