Approximately half the population has symptoms from the gut, and about 15 per cent have significant problems. Gastro- oesophageal reflux, dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, the so-called functional diagnoses, which often lack an identifiable cause, are among the commonest ailments affecting the population.
