Alzheimer's disease is the commonest type of dementia. There are also less common types, e.g. frontal lobe dementia. The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society currently hosts research into the diagnosis of dementing diseases and into the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in particular. Research in diagnostics is mainly concerned with imaging methods, particularly magnetic resonance imaging techniques (MRI).
The primary focus is the study of brain structure and how early it is possible to detect changes in a variety of dementing diseases. MRI can also be used in other ways, e.g. in the study of brain diffusion directions and the chemical changes that take place during the course of the disease. Studies of brain activity using functional MRI are also in progress.
A number of clinical trials are ongoing. These mainly involve the treatment of Alzheimer's disease by immunological methods. Research is also being carried out into the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in particular in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
