About Team Leader Ulf Hedin
Professor Ulf Hedin is the Group Leader of Vascular Surgery and Senor Consultant in the Heart and Vascular Theme, Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital. He obtained his MD degree in 1985, PhD in Medical Cell Biology in 1989, and Docent in 1994, all from Karolinska Institutet. As a postdoc and Senior Vascular Fellow he spent 1995-1996 at the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. After returning to Karolinska, he obtained speciality degrees in general and vascular surgery in 1997 and started building his research group with major focus on carotid atherosclerotic disease. His research has been distinguished with important awards, for example the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation ‘Big Gift Award’ in 2018.
Ulf Hedin acted as the Deputy Prefect of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, KI 2005-09, he was the Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery, Karolinska University Hospital 2010-2016 and Visiting Professor in Vascular Surgery, University of Gothenburg 2017-2018. On the national and international level, he has been involved in various committees and steering board functions, most notably as the national representative in the European Society for Vascular Surgery and the International Surgical Group, board member in the Swedish Research council, the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, the Research council of the Lundbeck Foundation, Denmark, and Scientific expert in Vascular Surgery in the Swedish Board of Welfare. He also acts as Associate Editor for the Journal Vascular Surgery–Vascular Science.
Throughout his career, Ulf Hedin has also continuously acted as supervisor for doctoral and master students, as well as organiser of PhD courses and clinical courses in Vascular Surgery at Karolinska. Since 1996 he has acted as the Director or co-Director of the Biomedicine program Molecular Medicine, Karolinska Institutet as well as the MD Program in Vascular Surgery at Karolinska Hospital.
