Admission to doctoral education at PHS
On 1 July 2018, KI introduced new admission regulations for doctoral education. This page describes the admission process for doctoral education at the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS).
There is no general admission to doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet. The admission process at the Department of Public Health sciences is carried out according to the general rules for doctoral education at KI.
Entry requirements for doctoral education

For doctoral supervisors at the department
Admission process for a doctoral position at PHS:
The admission process begins with the establishment of a doctoral position (step 1), to which a prospective student is then recruited (step 2). The process ends with the head of department’s decision to accept the candidate into doctoral education (step 3), upon which an individual study plan (ISP) is adopted (step 4). Before establishing a doctoral position
Before establishment of a new doctoral position, the prospective main supervisor needs to have a certificate of completed doctoral supervisor training, and have an approved ‘green light’. Find more information on how to apply for ‘green light’ at PHS.
How to become a doctoral student at PHS
To become a doctoral student at the Department of Public Health Sciences, you start by applying for one or more of the announced doctoral projects at the departments. For questions regarding the doctoral education position you may contact the contact person in the advertisement.
If you have your own funding, in form of an external scholarship, you can still apply for any of the announced projects but you can also try to establish contact with a research group at the department.
If the scholarship has been earned in competition with others the project might not have to be announced like the other projects. Please be aware that the research group still might have to pay for you if the scholarship is not high enough. About external scholarships.
There are also other ways into doctoral education, for example for medical doctors employed at one of the hospitals.
The admission decision is taken by the Head of the Department, based on the recommendation of the Director of Doctoral Education.
After admission and employment
The student and supervisor should submit a proposed individual study plan (ISP) within a month of the start of studies.
UKÄ’s regulatory decision on KI’s admission process
The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) concluded in is regulatory decision of 13/3 2018 that the admission process KI applied for its doctoral students contravened the Higher Education Ordinance and the Higher Education Act.
