Research focus
Our research group performs translational and clinical research concerning hypertension, vascular medicine, and cardiovascular prevention.
Our projects are in close collaboration with the Departments of Cardiology and Clinical Physiology at Danderyd University Hospital, and with our European Society of Hypertension Excellence Centre in Hypertension, our outpatient specialist centre for vascular medicine, and the integrated multiprofessional outpatient clinic for patients with combined cardiac, kidney, and diabetic disease.
Key interests include neurohormonal and other mechanisms for the control of blood pressure, cardiac and vascular function, endothelial function, and haemostatic mechanisms. Hypertension and pregnancy related blood pressure elevation, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and obstructive sleep apnoea are conditions of special interest. We conduct highly profiled research on cardiovascular effects of tobacco and other nicotine containing products.
The complex interaction between heart disease, metabolic disorders, and kidney disease (the cardiac-metabolic-renal syndrome) is investigated in mechanistic, and population and registry-based studies. New health care models for complex multimorbidity with interdisciplinary and multiprofessional collaboration including primary health care are evaluated.
Tools and technologies
We develop tools for cardiovascular risk prediction and prevention of an acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and stroke. This includes investigating mechanisms contributing to vascular dysfunction, coagulation, and immune mechanisms.
Our research includes the development of novel technologies to evaluate cardiac and vascular function, and the use of advanced artificial intelligence.
We also study implementation and adherence to guideline recommendations and the use of medicines, and health economic aspects on the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Contributions
We have contributed with advanced examinations in SCAPIS (Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study).
Further, we have established the largest primary care research database for cardiovascular disease in Sweden (Swedish Primary Care Cardiovascular Database) and founded a research database for patients with acute chest pain attending the emergency department (Clinical Expert Operating System – Chest Pain Danderyd Study).
We provide advanced endovascular renal denervation for the treatment of uncontrolled hypertension and lead the national registry (Swedish Registry for Renal Denervation).
