CAIR-Lab

Clinical Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CAIR-Lab) is a world unique institution, an innovation laboratory dedicated to developing clinical applications based on artificial intelligence (AI). CAIR-Lab will be located at Danderyd University Hospital (DUH) and will be in a close collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, the Institution for Clinical Sciences at Danderyd Hospital (KI DS). Our vision is to create an environment that combines competence in medical science, technical development, and innovation to aid clinicians to develop products that will be used in the health care of the future.

Background

AI has made significant progress in recent years, and the development of various applications has been explosive over the past year alone. When we began with AI in 2014, it was a technical curiosity that has now evolved into a practical tool used daily in both private and professional life.

The potential to use AI applications in clinical healthcare was identified early, and it is now becoming an established research field. The number of publications on medical AI quintupled from 2017 to 2022, with nearly 70,000 articles registered in PubMed.

Despite this intensive research activity, few AI innovations make the transition from research projects to clinical applications used in hospitals. Successfully establishing a clinical AI application is complex, involving many diverse steps.

The first step involves developing the AI model, which requires both clinical and technical expertise to identify a relevant problem and question, as well as access to the necessary data. The next step is to take the AI model to a self-developed pilot project and then further through the CE marking process to scale up for broader use.

To successfully achieve this, the following are required:

  1. A clear need and benefit in the clinical environment
  2. Close collaboration with the hospital's IT department
  3. Legal expertise with experience in MDR and CE marking
  4. A link to commercial actors

CAIR-Lab so far

CAIR-Lab started in 2021, but our experience in AI research dates back to 2014 when we began with AI interpretation of orthopaedic radiographs and were the first in the world to publish in this area in 2017. Our first pilot project with AI-supported radiograph interpretation was launched in 2019. Since the beginning, we have conducted several projects in various medical fields. CAIR-Lab is part of Clinicum at Karolinska Institutet and is located at Danderyd Hospital and KI DS.

National network of AI nodes

CAIR-Lab is now working to establish nodes at other hospitals across Sweden. The goal is to create a network for collaboration and knowledge exchange on clinical AI.
