Helge Brandberg

Helge Brandberg, MD, PhD is a specialist physician in cardiology and internal medicine at the Department of Cardiology, Danderyd University Hospital, where he also serves as Medical Informatics Officer. His research focuses on how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital decision-support systems can improve diagnosis and risk assessment in cardiovascular disease. He leads the Clinical AI Research Laboratory (CAIR-Lab), a research environment jointly run by Karolinska Institutet and Danderyd Hospital for the development and implementation of clinical AI.

He received his PhD from Karolinska Institutet in 2024 with a thesis on computerized history-taking for acute chest pain (CLEOS-CPDS). The studies demonstrated how an AI-based tool can be used to obtain a structured medical history during waiting time in the emergency department and improve risk stratification of patients presenting with chest pain.

In his ongoing research, he develops and evaluates multimodal AI models for acute chest pain, where computerized history-taking is integrated with AI-based ECG analysis and other clinical data to improve diagnosis and prediction of cardiovascular events.

In addition to his research and clinical work, he serves as Chair of the Working Group on Digital Health within the Swedish Society of Cardiology and is a member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Working Group on Digital Cardiology.
