Pathogenesis, progression, and complications in acute and chronic kidney disease – Stefan Jacobson's research group

The research group has been active for over 30 years with networks at Danderyd Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital, Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), Cancer Center Karolinska (CCK), Unit for Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB), SciLifeLab, and CLINTEC, KI. In addition, national and international research collaborations are ongoing.

The research projects aim to increase our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the onset and progression of acute and chronic kidney disease, with a particular focus on glomerulonephritis.

In addition, the pathophysiology underlying the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and serious infections in patients with kidney disease is being studied.

In collaboration with the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) at Karolinska Institutet, large patient registries relating to the management of kidney disease in the Stockholm Region are being analysed, whilst a national kidney biopsy registry is being used to study the progression of kidney disease and the risk of complications in patients with nephrotic syndrome.

In collaboration with Sophiahemmet University, end-of-life care and decision-making for patients with severe kidney failure and on dialysis are being studied.
