Research and doctoral education in primary care
Primary care supports people with many different health needs throughout their lives. This makes it an important setting for research into preventive interventions, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and the organisation of care. Research is conducted at several of KI’s departments and often takes place in close collaboration with healthcare providers and Region Stockholm.
Research based on patients’ everyday lives
Researchers at KI’s Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society conduct research in primary care in many areas, including:
- mental health problems
- diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer
- dementia and cognitive impairment
- rehabilitation after stroke
- physical activity in long-term illness
- nursing care and older people’s health
- medical education and general practice
Researchers from other departments at KI also conduct research related to primary care.
- Department of Global Public Health: prevention, health equity, high blood pressure, mental health, endometriosis and menopause care.
- Department of Clinical Neuroscience: psychological research in primary care.
- Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics: health economics, informatics, leadership, implementation and suicide prevention.
- Department of Women’s and Children’s Health runs projects in collaboration with healthcare services in the region.
Doctoral education in general practice and primary care
KI has a growing research environment in general practice and primary care. Activities include professors, senior lecturers, associate professors and doctoral students, as well as a large number of clinically active researchers connected to primary care. A clinical research school contributes to doctoral education in the field.
