CBT for pediatric asthma and anxiety
Asthma is a chronic disease that affects approximately 5 - 15 percent of all Swedish children. Asthma is associated with increased anxiety and worry, and the risk of anxiety is doubled in children with asthma compared to other children. Because it can be difficult to distinguish between asthma and anxiety, comorbid anxiety and asthma can worsen the asthma and increase anxiety.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the recommended treatment for anxiety in children, but few studies have examined the effect of CBT on children with asthma and anxiety.
In this project, we want to investigate whether Internet-CBT for children, adolescents and their parents can be effective in improving asthma anxiety, asthma symptoms and quality of life. The researchers behind the study have previously developed internet-CBT for adults with asthma and anxiety with promising results. To adapt and tailor Internet-CBT specifically for pediatric asthma-related anxiety, the researchers will examine core behaviors and responses related to asthma and anxiety.
In the current study, we will interview children and adolescents (aged 8-17 years) and their parents about daily hassles of living with asthma and anxiety. The results from the interviews will provide the basis for the adaptation of Internet-CBT for children and young people with asthma and anxiety.
