Biosafety and translational facilities

Karolinska Institutet collaborates closely with the healthcare sector, mainly in the Stockholm region. On this page we have collected clinical and translational research infrastructures and different kinds of laboratory resources, including BSL-3.

Academic Specialist Centre Study Unit

The Study Unit of the Stockholm Academic Specialist Centre (in Swedish: Akademiskt specialistcentrum – studieenheten) provides support to conduct clinical studies within the Region Stockholm health care system. Information in Swedish only.

ANA Futura BSL3 Core Facility

The ANA Futura BSL3 Core Facility is situated in Campus Flemingsberg. The facility has three culture rooms for work with airborne pathogens, and a dedicated room for FACS sorting. This facility is a biosafety level 3 resource for academia, health care and industry.

BSL3 Biomedicum Core Facility

The BSL3 Biomedicum Core Facility is a state-of-the-art infrastructure located in Biomedicum, Solna campus. The facility enables research on highly-pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Clinical Genomics

The Clinical Genomics Stockholm Core Facility is a research infrastructure at SciLifeLab for large-scale, genomics-based analyses using next generation sequencing technologies. The unit assists in translational research projects, in the translation of genomics-based tools to routine clinical care and also aims to improve the capability for national microbial surveillance and for pandemic preparedness. All projects are carried out in close collaboration with the Swedish healthcare system and medical expertise provided by the clinical diagnostic laboratories and patients’ managing physicians. eHealth Core Facility

The eHealth Core Facility aims to establish a sustainable and efficient organisation to support healthcare research and development at KI, in the Stockholm region and nationally. The facility consists of four nodes at different departments at KI.

Facility for Advanced Cell and Tissue Culturing

Primary cells constitute a valuable resource for studies of disease mechanisms. Facility for Advanced Cell and Tissue Culturing (FACT) provides two laboratories suitable and safe for primary cell culturing, as well as gene manipulation with the use of lentivirus and adenovirus vector systems. Users are offered professional support adjusted to their level of previous experience from primary cell culture and virus vector systems. The overall aim of this facility is to provide a synergistic platform, where scientists can meet, troubleshoot, and share experiences. Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska

Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska (GMCK) offers advanced genomics-based diagnostics using large-scale DNA sequencing. GMCK is a KI and Region Stockholm core facility for translational research, clinical trials and diagnostics.

Karolinska Center for Cell Therapy

Karolinska Center for Cell Therapy (KCC) – inluding the production unit Vecura – supports and facilitates for researchers, clinicians and industrial companies that aim to develop quality assured Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and cell therapy products for unmet clinical needs. Karolinska Trial Alliance

Karolinska Trial Alliance (KTA) is a pro­fes­sional Clin­i­cal Research Cen­ter at Karolin­ska Uni­ver­sity Hos­pi­tal in Stock­holm, sup­ported by Region Stockholm and Karolin­ska Insti­tutet. KTA is highly spe­cial­ised and has a com­pre­hen­sive knowl­edge within the field and gives hands-​on sup­port for clin­i­cal research to opti­mise the process of con­duct­ing clin­i­cal trials.

Karolinska University Laboratory

The Karolinska University Laboratory offers clinical sampling and sample analysis provided by healthcare professionals. This facility is runned by the Stockholm Region in close connection to the Karolinska University Hospital.

Motion, Function and Health

Motion, Function and Health – Rörelse, funktion och hälsa in Swedish – offers expertise in modern motion analysis, measuring methods, and digitalisation in healthcare for children and youth. The facility also offers seminars, courses and networking within their research field. Information in Swedish only.

Pathology Core Facility Karolinska

Pathology Core Facility Karolinska (PCFK) offers laboratory services and is a hub for biobank and research facility-support in tissue research. PFCK collaborates with healthcare providers and researchers to jointly achieve evidence-based care and increased patient safety. Change language on site. 

Stockholm Medical Image Laboratory and Education

The Stockholm Medical Image Laboratory and Education (SMILE) is a joint core facility of Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, with the purpose to facilitate evaluation of medical digital images, irrespective of source. SMILE is the translational hub where clinicians, researchers and doctoral students from academy, healthcare and industry meet and benefit from the collected competence in image analysis, visualization and quantification. While using the images, tools and innovations for improved diagnostics and patient care, near collaboration with medtech companies is a prerequisite. SÖS Research Center

The SÖS Research Center provides support for secure data management, handling of samples, research laboratories for experimental projects, Statistics, Biobank. Only open for researchers at Stockholm South General Hospital. 


The primary goal of the uMOVE Core Facility is to provide a state of the art platform for investigation of human movement and behavior for mainly researchers within care sciences via multi-disciplinary approaches. uMOVE will provide new knowledge and develop evaluation methods of the dynamical aspects of movement in interplay with psychological aspects − taking into account the impact of cognitive and emotional factors on movement such as the impact of pain, depression or cognitive processes (and vice versa). VirusTech Core Facility

Genetically engineered viruses provide powerful tools for introducing desired genes in cells. To facilitate the use of this state-of-art methodology, the VirusTech Core Facility at KI's Department of Cell and Molecular Biology specializes in the production, purification and concentration of such virus particles. This facility is available through the iLab booking system for core facilities.
