Infectious Diseases and Dermatology Unit
The research at the unit is focused around studies on how the interplay between humans and micro-organisms results in disease and how this can be treated and prevented.
About our research
The unit operates at Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet at the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. Presently, four fields of research dominate: HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis, and clinical research on bacterial infections.

The unit's research ranges from experimental to clinical oriented research with focus on the translational aspect, including clinical trials of anti-microbial treatment and vaccines. In addition, involvement in cohort-studies with large patient-material is increasing. A strong commitment is research and collaboration with partners in low-middle income countries, in especially Africa and Asia.
The unit has gained international recognition within antimicrobial treatment and has a long tradition of global collaborations. The vision is to be a leading translational research center through which new treatments and diagnostics rapidly can be applied into clinical care.
Research areas include:
- Viral/ microbial immunology
- Antiviral/ antimicrobial therapy
- Clinical bacterial infections
- Clinical HIV research
- Clinical Hepatitis research
- Clinical trials/ Cohort studies
- Global Health, Epidemiology
- Skin disease
