Contributing to significant new discoveries

At Karolinska Institutet, a number of discoveries have been made which have changed the world. Of the eight Swedes to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine so far, five come from Karolinska Institutet. In dentistry, the most important discovery at KI was that of Yngve Eriksson in the 1960s concerning the great importance of fluoridation for dental health. This was pioneering work which reduced tooth decay in children and adolescents. In recent years, researchers working here have also discovered that peripheral glial cells (a type of nerve cell) can be recruited as stem cells for both odontoblasts and pulp cells and thereby aid in tooth development and regeneration of dental tissue.

Collaborate locally and globally

The Department of Dental Medicine enjoys close collaboration with KI’s University Dental Clinic which, among other things, provides the students of the dentistry and dental hygiene programmes with clinical proficiency training and conducts highly specialised dentistry. Many of us employed at the department also work to a certain extent at the University Dental Clinic.

The department also works with dental clinics and researchers in the region, such as Region Stockholm, Folktandvården and Stockholms Sjukhem. The department is also home to a major international exchange, both within research and education, and guest researchers and students from all over the world.
