Om mig
Jag började min karriär som kliniskt verksam läkare och efter avlagd specialistexamen i Barnmedicin och doktorsavhandling vid Göteborgs Universitet så fortsatte jag som HHMI Postdoctoral Fellow vid Stanford University. Sedan 1997 är jag verksam vid Karolinska Institutet och var 2008-2015 Director vid Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, Köln, Tyskland. Mitt forskningsområde har hela tiden varit fokuserat på mitokondrier och hur nedsatt mitokondriefunktion orsakar sjukdom hos människa. Jag har också ett stort intresse för molekylär reglering av mtDNA expression. Under årens lopp har jag utbildat många forskare som sedan gått vidare med självständiga karriärer. Visioner för mitt uppdrag i konsistoriet:
Mitt bidrag till verksamheten kommer att grundas på min långa nationella och internationella erfarenhet av grundforskning och translationell medicinsk forskning. Jag har även erfarenhet av utbildning av läkare och stor erfarenhet att handleda doktorander. Karolinska Institutets forskare har varit mycket framgångsrika att attrahera olika typer av extern forskningsfinansiering. Tyvärr har detta lett till en okontrollerad expansion med ett stort glapp mellan nivån på statsanslag, som används för betalning av lärarlöner, hyror, IT avgifter, medfinansiering mm., samt tillgängliga externa forskningsanslag. De befintliga statsanslagen (de intramurala resurserna) är otillräckliga i förhållande till verksamhetens storlek. I nuläget har olika anslagsgivare därför ett alltför stort inflytande över rekryteringar och forskningens inriktning på KI. Det är uppenbart att KI behöver se över sin storlek och konsolidera verksamheten. Även tjänstestrukturen för unga forskare är dåligt definierad och bör ses över. Det måste i sammanhanget påminnas om att stora upptäckter sällan är resultatet av strategiska initiativ utan ofta tillkommer då forskare ges resurser att långsiktigt bearbeta vetenskapliga problem som typiskt ligger utanför de för tillfället populära forskningsinriktningarna. Stora grundläggande upptäckter leder ofta till en mängd nya tillämpningar och forskare på KI måste därför ges förutsättningar att leverera sådan viktiga genombrott. Jag vill medverka till att påskynda dessa förändringar.
