Om mig
Professor i klinisk och experimentell fettvävsforskning, samt chef för Avdelningen för endokrinologi med Lipidlaboratoriet och Patientforskningscentrum vid institutionen för medicin i Huddinge. Efter sammanslagningen med BioNut heter avdelningen sedan 2025 Centrum för Reproduktion, Metabolism och Molekylär Medicin (CeRM).
Mikael Rydén föddes 1970 i Stockholm, tog läkarexamen 1996 och disputerade 1997. Parallellt med studierna på Karolinska Institutet bedrev han forskarstudier i molekylär neurobiologi. Han fortsatte forska kring intracellulära signalvägar i humana fettceller och deras relevans för utveckling av insulinresistens och typ 2-diabetes.
Han blev 2002 docent i experimentell endokrinologi och 2006 i endokrinologi. Han tilldelades 2003 Young Investigators Award in Basic Science från European Association on the Study of Obesity och innehade 2003-2009 en halvtidstjänst för forskande kliniker. Han blev 2005 specialist i internmedicin och 2006 i endokrinologi/diabetologi.
Han blev 2010 universitetslektor och överläkare vid kliniken för endokrinologi, metabolism och diabetes, Karolinska universitetssjukhuset Huddinge, och är sedan 2010 ansvarig för Kliniskt centrum för metabol forskning på diabetes inom KI:s diabetesprogram.

Mikael Rydén utnämndes den 1 juli 2013 till professor i klinisk och experimentell fettvävsforskning vid Karolinska Institutet, förenad med befattning som specialistkompetent läkare vid Karolinska universitetssjukhuset.
Forskningsbeskrivning
- Fettväven är kroppens mest plastiska organ och största hormonproducent. Från att länge ha betraktats främst som en energilagrande vävnad, vet man nu att den spelar en central roll i utvecklingen av insulinresistens, dyslipidemi och atheroskleros vid kliniska tillstånd som övervikt/fetma, typ 2-diabetes, familjär kombinerad hyperlipidemi, kronisk njursvikt, cancer, kakexi och polycystiskt ovarialsyndrom. Forskningen omfattar cell- och molekylärbiologiska tekniker i olika cellkultursystem samt kliniska studier.

- Swedish Research Council1 januari 2023 - 31 december 2027The main function of white adipose tissue (WAT) is to store (lipogenesis) and release (lipolysis) energy. In humans, both pathways are under hormonal control where insulin stimulates lipogenesis and inhibits lipolysis, whereas catecholamines and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) activate lipolysis. The balance between lipogenesis and lipolysis determines WAT lipid turnover and thereby its storage capacity. By comparing WAT from people with and without atherosclerosis, our preliminary data has identified that the two groups differ in their ability to turnover lipids. More specifically, subjects with atherosclerosis display reduced responsiveness not only to insulin, but also to catecholamines and ANP. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that this “multi-hormone resistance” promotes cardiometabolic complications via ectopic lipid deposition and impacts on the response to antidiabetic drugs. However, whether the attenuated response to hormones and drugs depends on a general dysregulation in all fat cells or in specific adipocyte subtypes is unclear. To test this, we will perform detailed phenotyping of clinical intervention studies using spatial transcriptomics and organellar proteomics and perform state-of-the-art experiments in human adipocyte 3D models. By unravelling the mechanisms underlying inter-individual variations in lipid turnover, our project can improve diagnostic and therapeutic precision in people suffering from common cardiometabolic complications.
