  • Mikael Norman was born 1957 in Stockholm, Sweden. He graduated as M.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1982. Since 2008, he is professor in pediatrics & neonatal medicine at Karolinska Institutet. Between 1995 and 2015, he worked - besides being a clinician and researcher - in different administrative positions (head of department) at Karolinska University Hospital. Mikael Norman has supervised 29 PhD-students and published over 280 papers. Presently he works as professor at KI and as co-director for the Swedish Neonatal Quality Register.

    Academic honours and awards:
    - Swedish Society of Medicine: Regnell´s price 2010 for the manuscript: "Hypertension, Diabetes and Obesity: Looming legacies of the Biafran Famine" by authors: Hult M, Tornhammar P, Ueda P, Chima C, Edstedt Bonamy AK, Ozumba B, Norman M.

    - Swedish Society of Medicine: Regnell´s price 2014 for the manuscript: "Cesarean section and hematopoietic stem cell epigenetics in the newborn infants - implications for furture health?" by authors: Almgren M, Schlinzig T, Gomez-Cabrero D, Gunnar A, Sundin M, Johansson S, Norman M, Ekström TJ.

    - Hugo Lagercrantz Award 2024 for "internationally distinguished research on developmental programming and preterm birth."

Undervisning

  • Mikael Norman is the editor of 3 Swedish textbooks in Pediatrics and Neonatology, and author of 25 book chapters. He lectures at all levels.

    Founder - together with Drs Stefan Johansson, Haresh Kirpalani (USA), Hesham Abdel-Hady (Egypt), Clyde Wright (USA) - of the International Society of Evidence-Based Neonatology (https://ebneo.org/).
