About me

  • Mikael Norman was born 1957 in Stockholm, Sweden. He graduated as M.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1982 and finalized his Ph.D. in 1992. In 1995, he was appointed Consultant and in 1998, he became Associate Professor in Pediatrics. In 2001-2004 Mikael Norman worked as senior researcher at the Swedish Research Council. He received a chair as Professor in Pediatrics &

  • Neonatal Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in 2008. Between 1995 and 2015, he worked - besides being a clinician and researcher - in different administrative positions (head of department) at Karolinska University Hospital. Mikael Norman has supervised 26 PhD-students and published over 250 papers. Presently he works as professor at KI, chair for the Swedish Neonatal Quality Register and medical advisor for the Swedish Patient Insurance Company.

    Academic honours, awards and prizes:
    - Swedish Society of Medicine: Regnell´s price 2010 (130 000 SEK) for the manuscript: "Hypertension, Diabetes and Obesity: Looming legacies of the Biafran Famine" by authors: Hult M, Tornhammar P, Ueda P, Chima C, Edstedt Bonamy AK, Ozumba B, Norman M.

    - Swedish Society of Medicine: Regnell´s price 2014 (130 000 SEK) for the manuscript: "Cesarean section and hematopoietic stem cell epigenetics in the newborn infants - implications for furture health?" by authors: Almgren M, Schlinzig T, Gomez-Cabrero D, Gunnar A, Sundin M, Johansson S, Norman M, Ekström TJ.

    - Hugo Lagercrantz Award 2024 (50 000 SEK) for "internationally distinguished research on developmental programming and preterm birth."

  • Research interests:
    - Cardiovascular system in pregnant women, newborn infants and children: its structure and function in health and disease
    - Developmental origins of health and disease
    - Preterm birth: risk factors, interventions and short and long-term outcome
    - Perinatal epidemiology
    - Patient safety and quality of care

Teaching

  • Mikael Norman is the editor of 3 Swedish textbooks in Pediatrics and Neonatology, and author of 24 book chapters. He lectures at all levels.
