  • Bioinformatician and computational biologist with a background in biology.
    I am a PhD in molecular genetics since 2018 (Carthage University, Tunisia). Driven by curiosity, I moved to explore molecular evolution as a computational biologist in Stockholm University. Now I redirected her skills to the exciting field of clinical research with focus on multiomics data
    analysis of Primary Sclerosing Colangitis (PSC).
    I am also part of the Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (CBB) where I redirect my bioinformatic skills to mentoring and helping others. If you

  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare disease of the bile duct. Patients with PSC are very susceptible to develop malignancy (especially
    cholangiocarcinoma and colorectal cancer). We analyse and integrate different types of omics data in order to find new biomarkers for diagnosis and
    prognosis purposes. We also seek to understand the underlying biology and pathways of the disease.

    Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) presents several distinct symptom presentations defining different PSC subtypes, based on the presence or absence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the presence of cancer, and the disease aggressivity. Importantly, individuals with PSC might benefit from different therapeutic and surveillance strategies. However, the biological understanding of these various phenotypes of PSC is poor. Although the disease is manifested in the liver and the biliary tract, PSC has a global impact on the body. Every minute, a liter of blood is passing the liver, where the latter releases fingerprints from its damaged tissues. Therefore, we hypothesize that a large-scale characterization of the blood can reveal biological differences of the PSC subtypes. In this pilot study, we propose a large-scale quantification of the proteins, metabolites, gene expression sequences and autoantibodies that are present in the blood of 36 people affected by PSC and healthy donors. We then plan to use machine learning methods to find biomarkers that are informative about (1) the prognosis of the disease and (2) the PSC subtype, namely PSC with and without IBD, PSC progressing faster toward end stage liver disease, and PSC with cancer. These biomarkers are blood based and can be implemented in a simple, non-invasive clinical test as a surveillance tool for monitoring PSC progression. The project provides a complete description of the PSC subtypes on several biological levels (autoantibodies, gene expression, proteins, and metabolites), setting the foundation to (1) find new targets for therapy, encouraging pharmacological investment in PSC treatment and (2) adapt PSC health care plan to the individual needs.

  • Nya biologiska markörer för gallgångscancer, gallblåserscancer och primär skleroserande kolangit

    Gallgångscancer (CCA) och gallblåserscancer (GBC) är mycket aggressiva former av cancer som är vanligtvis mycket sent upptäkt och har dålig prognos. Förhöjd risk för CCA och GBC är mestadels oförklarlig och studier som förklara riskfaktorerna behövs. Primär skleroserande kolangit (PSC) är en kronisk progressiv leversjukdom med hög risk för gallgångsrelaterad cancer (15-20%). PSC har ingen känd behandling som kan bromsar sjukdomsutveckling eller minskar cancerrisk. PSC patienter kan fungera som en modell för att studera populationer med hög risk för CCA och GBC. Markörer för tidig cancerutveckling och prognos saknas för de här sjukdomar. Den här forskningsprogrammet söker nya markörer för tidig cancerdiagnostik och sjukdomrogress hos patienter med hög risk för CCA och GBC och för att hjälpa till vid beslutsfattandet om kirurgiskt avlägsnande av tumören. Den identifierar också biologiska mekanismer som påverkas gallgångs sjukdomar.
