PSF general information and operating guidelines

The aim of PSF is to provide services in protein production, 3D structure determination and biophysical characterization to all researchers. We also offer onsite access to instrumentation for high throughput crystallography and biophysical characterization.

We offer expert service in all steps of protein production,  from construct design, gene ordering (or cloning), expression cultures and protein purification. We work with E.coli, HEK cells and insect cells such as Sf9.

Our crystallography platform act as a stepping-stone environment to large-scale infrastructures such as MAX IV and DIAMOND. We are engaged in PReSTO, the integrated structural biology software project at the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS).

How to become a user

We work with Swedish and international academic clients and are also open to request from industry. We accommodate requests on a first-come-fist serve basis. In times of high demand and need to prioritise, Swedish academic clients are given priority.

After an initial contact we arrange a meeting to discuss the details and timing of a project. For E.coli protein production services, we ask the client to fill out an application to the national infrastructure Protein Production Sweden

User fees and billing

The user fees for Swedish academics are based on cost for consumables, instruments, university OH, and part of the cost for staff and rent. Commercial users pay full costs including staff, premises and an added margin. For more details, please contact us.

Instrument access is granted after user training and booking is made in instrument calendars in iLab.

Invoice specifications (pre-invoice) are emailed to the user/PI from iLab, and payable invoice is subesequently sent by KI’s central economy service.

How to acknowledge PSF

To support PSF in future evaluations and applications all users are required to acknowledge experimentation or services performed at PSF in manuscripts submitted for publication.

Examples:

  • Part of this work was facilitated by the Protein Science Facility at Karolinska Institutet (http://ki.se/psf)
  • Part of this work was facilitated by the Protein Science Facility at Karolinska Institutet (http://ki.se/psf) and we would like to thank x, y and z for assistance.

External use of the core facility

PSF can offer services without a commissioned/contract research or collaborative research agreement, in accordance with the Swedish governmental ordinance (2022:1378) on fees for research infrastructure.
