SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science
Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a SEK 3.1 billion 12-year project supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) foundation. SciLifeLab hosts the program, and works together with 11 Swedish research institutions.

About the DDLS program
The DDLS program aims to:
- train the next generation of life scientists
- create a strong computational and data science foundation
- strengthen the research competence in Sweden
- strengthen national collaborations between universities
- bridge the research communities of life sciences and data sciences
- create partnerships with industry, healthcare and other national and international stakeholders such as the WASP Program
The DDLS program has 4 strategic focus areas:
- Cell and molecular biology
- Precision medicine and diagnostics
- Evolution and biodiversity
- Epidemiology and biology of infection
These strategic areas for data-driven research are essential for improving the lives of people as well as animals and nature, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability.
SciLifeLab works together with Swedish research institutions:
- Karolinska Institutet
- Chalmers University of Technology
- University of Gothenburg
- KTH Royal Institute of Technology
- Linköping University
- Lund University
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
- Stockholm University
- Umeå University
- Uppsala University
- Natural History Museum
DDLS Research school
The DDLS research school is a national initiative that will train scientists with high competence within the DDLS research areas.
- 185 PhD students will be recruited nationally to academic and industrial projects with support from the DDLS program
- DDLS PhD Program launched the first call for grant support for PhD students in 2023
- 8 PhD students will be recruited to KI in 2024
DDLS Fellows Program
The DDLS Fellows Program is a career program aiming at accelerating the data-driven paradigm shift in life sciences in Sweden. The program includes the recruitment of 39 Fellows, 4 of which will be joining KI.

DDLS Data Science Node in Precision Medicine and Diagnostics
Precision medicine and diagnostics is a fast-developing field where integrated data is used to support processes to select the best possible treatment for each individual patient. KI hosts a Data Science Node in Precision Medicine and Diagnostics as part of the national DDLS program and associated to the SciLifeLab Data Platform. KI are now building a data node to accelerate and spearhead the worldwide development of precision medicine and diagnostics, a process where different expertise work in teams to improve future healthcare.
