Research STAR

The Stockholm Aneurysm network’s goal is to deepen the understanding of the disease and improve diagnosis by identifying patients at higher risk of progression and rupture. Aneurysm rupture, if left untreated, can be life-threatening.

The primary objective of the network is to advance scientific understanding of the pathogenesis and etiology of the disease, while enhancing diagnostic precision through the identification of patients at elevated risk for disease progression and aneurysm rupture. Untreated rupture of an aneurysm is associated with a high mortality rate. Furthermore, the network seeks to develop individualized therapeutic strategies by stratifying patients according to their specific rupture risk and treatment requirements.

The network collaborates on translational projects (see figure), where findings from aortic wall biopsies are correlated with clinical data and imaging results.

The group has a particular focus on aneurysm rupture and growth, as well as gender-related aspects. Registry-based studies are also conducted within the framework of this network.

The researchers in the network operate in various locations, universities and institutions. The main base of the STAR network is at Karolinska Institutet.
