Infrastructure for mRNA - LNP at Karolinska ATMP Center

Karolinska ATMP Center offers an mRNA-LNP infrastructure at the pre-GMP unit on the Flemingsberg campus. The infrastructure is designed to support researchers working with mRNA in their projects, offering assistance with production, formulation, or method development in preparation for preclinical studies.

Our offering

The service is available to researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, as well as external partners.

Production of mRNA for research purposes

• target-encoding, purified mRNA for experimental use
• both “naked” mRNA and mRNA formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs)

Rapid access to reporter mRNA

• ready-to-use reporter constructs available
• additional reporter mRNA can be produced on request

Formulation of mRNA in LNPs

• encapsulation of mRNA in lipid nanoparticles
• possibility to formulate mRNA, pDNA, or other RNA types produced by the researcher

Support in design and development

• assistance with generating mRNA constructs
• method development and process optimisation
• quality control ahead of the next development stage
• access to pre-GMP laboratories for project development when needed

Types of Projects

The infrastructure can be used by researchers working in areas such as:
• vaccines and immunotherapy
• gene therapy and gene editing (including CRISPR/Cas)
• CAR‑T-related projects
• protein expression and short-term protein replacement
• rare diseases
• basic research using mRNA as a tool

From pre-GMP to GMP

Work within the mRNA infrastructure takes place in a pre-GMP environment and is tailored for research purposes. The processes are scalable and designed to allow future GMP adaptation. The long-term goal is to produce GMP-grade mRNA for clinical studies.

Getting started

1.  Initial Meeting. Contact the pre-GMP unit at the Karolinska ATMP Center to schedule an initial meeting. During this meeting, the project’s needs, possible workflows, and timelines will be reviewed.

2. Discussion and quotation. A preliminary cost estimate can be provided based on the scope of the project.

3. Production and delivery. The work is carried out according to the agreed process. Reporter mRNA can often be delivered on short notice.
