Dietary factors and lifestyle in prevention of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications

The aim this project is to examine dietary and other lifestyle factors that may influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as well as the risk for people with type 2 diabetes to develop cardiovascular diseases. The overall goal is that these studies will contribute to improved possibilities for primary and secondary prevention.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the world’s major public health challenges, with a prevalence that has been rapidly increasing over the past decades and is expected to continue to do so in the coming years. Among its long-term complications is a substantially elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, which also is the main cause of death among people with diabetes. Dietary factors are of importance in both primary prevention and disease management, but gaps in the scientific evidence for dietary recommendations of specific foods still remain.
