Diet quality and combined diet and lifestyle in prevention of cardiovascular disease

The aim of these projects is examine the benefit of healthy diet and of a combined low-risk diet and healthy lifestyle practices on the incidence in women and men of major cardiovascular diseases

  • myocardial infarction
  • stroke
  • heart failure
  • atrial fibrillation

Overall this research improves knowledge on disease etiology and is crucial for the development of dietary guidelines. The results from the combined low-risk diet and lifestyle allow the potential benefits of relatively simple health messages to be communicated more effectively and play an important role in strengthening public health awareness. We have shown that the majority of cardiovascular diseases among Swedish women and men could potentially be avoided by combining healthy lifestyle practices such as eating a healthy diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, abstaining from smoking and consuming only moderate amounts of alcohol.
