Interest based activities in a nursing home setting
The aim of the study is to explore how interest-based activities can be made possible in a nursing home context.
Older adults who live in nursing homes have limited possibilities to influence their own engagement in activities in the nursing home context. Activities offered to the residents are created based on tradition and other peoples views of the needs of the residents rather then their own interests and desire. This is serious since we know that individually meaningful activities are crucial to maintain well-being and identity.
The project has a person-centered approach where the residents are involved as actors. Interests and desires among the residents are explored through a narrative approach. The prerequisites for interest-based activities are further inquired through a process where different activities are tried out in groups, in pairs or individually. Staff will be invited to take part in focus groups in order to capture their perspectives on activities and if and how interest-based activities can be made possible in a nursing home context.
