Gastroenterology and Rheumatology Unit
The Gastroenterology and Rheumatology Unit consists of two distinct operations that have inflammation in common. We have research groups within inflammatory and metabolic liver diseases, cholestatic liver diseases, gastrointestinal motility disorders and rheumatology.
Research areas
The rheumatology research focuses on the diseases rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The research in gastroenterology and hepatology focus on inflammatory changes that lead to dysfunction, fibrosis, and in later stages to cancer in the intestines and liver.
There are large groups of patients suffering from these diseases. Up to ten percent suffer from motility disorders, and liver disease is increasing in society. Our research is performed by many different techniques such as epidemiology, patient-oriented research with randomized trials as well as advanced studies in materials from patients.
