Clinical Education – Anders Sondén

The Clinical Education Research Group (CERG) conducts broad educational research with a particular focus on work-based learning and educational innovations. The group's long-term goal is to contribute to the creation of inclusive and accessible learning environments that enhance educational quality and prepare students for teamwork in healthcare settings.

Our research

The research group's projects address challenges in clinical education and explore pedagogical innovations in this context. A key objective of the group is to integrate research into clinical education. Current projects include interprofessional learning, clinical supervision, and support for students with diverse needs in health education.

The group is based at KI SÖS at Södersjukhuset in Stockholm, with the ambition to collaborate closely with other medical education groups at KI, as well as research groups at other universities in Sweden and internationally.

Current projects

Anders Sondén

This project aims to develop more inclusive learning environments for medical students with ADHD—the most common disability among students seeking accommodations. It explores student experiences and identifies barriers and opportunities for inclusion through an intersectional and norm-critical lens.

Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, the project examines how institutions and educators can better support these students

Anders Sondén

This project investigates the transition from medical student to junior supervisor—a role often accompanied by challenges and minimal preparation. At the same time, the less hierarchical relationship between junior doctors and students may create new opportunities for learning. The project highlights this transition and its significance for improving the quality of clinical supervision.

Anders Sondén

This project focuses on interprofessional learning and supervision within teams of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. Despite the decades-long practice of interprofessional supervision, little research has explored how it is experienced by students and supervisors.

The later phase of this doctoral project investigates the challenges and opportunities for effective learning in these settings, contributing to the development of training programs for interprofessional supervisors.

Irene Sterpu

This project explores how Nano Learning, a digital micro-learning method, can enhance clinical supervisors’ ability to provide constructive feedback to medical students. Feedback during clinical placements often lacks both quality and quantity, negatively impacting students' professional development. Nano Learning offers flexible and targeted education without adding to supervisors’ already demanding schedules.

The project evaluates participation rates, learning outcomes, and changes in the quality of feedback provided to students, complemented by qualitative interviews to gain deeper insights into the supervisors’ experiences and the educational impact.

The Swedish medical education system is undergoing a major reform. Starting in 2021, the medical program has been extended to six years and now leads directly to licensure, with the introduction of a transitional training period, bastjänstgöring (BT), as part of the new specialist training (ST). The previous system, with a 5.5-year program followed by an 18-month internship (AT), is being phased out. The new curriculum is goal-oriented and competency-based, placing high demands on supervision quality.

This project aims to evaluate the implementation of the reform, focusing on the role of supervision in clinical learning environments and medical students' readiness to work as licensed physicians. The research combines qualitative and quantitative methods
