The ALGOSH research program

Algorithms are reshaping the world of work, but our understanding of their impact on worker safety, health and well-being is limited, particularly in non-platform work settings. The ALGOSH research program seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and develop tools to reduce risks associated with algorithmic management. An international, interdisciplinary consortium of experts and stakeholders is collaborating to explore the challenges and opportunities algorithmic management presents in creating a safer and healthier work environment.

The ALGOSH definition of Algorithmic management (AM)

Utilizing a Delphi approach within Work Package 1 in 2024 (publication forthcoming), the following definition of algorithmic management is proposed:

Algorithmic management is the application of digital technologies to augment or automate managerial decision-making in the organization of work.

The organization of work refers to the ways in which work is coordinated and controlled to meet organizational goals. Managerial decision-making includes functions such as (i) directing, monitoring, or evaluating work; (ii) workforce planning; or (iii) hiring, rewarding, promoting, disciplining, and firing workers.

Digital technologies refer to software-powered systems or tools that collect, use, or generate data. They can vary from simple to more complex technologies including artificial intelligence and machine learning, and could include hardware components such as wearable devices, cameras, and scanners.

This type of management could impact workers’ health and well-being and their employment and working conditions. Workers, inclusive of managers and supervisors, can include individuals working in both standard and non-standard employment arrangements, as well as the self-employed. We acknowledge that individuals in informal employment (e.g., undeclared workers, employed persons in the informal sector, etc.) can also be affected by algorithmic management.
