Cancer - increased accuracy for better cancer care
A paradigm shift is underway in cancer treatment. Now that we are able to analyse every tumour cell in great detail, it is increasingly clear that each type of cancer can be divided into several categories, each of which should be fought with its own customized treatment.
Global Health - striving for a healthier world
Today, global health is a matter of everyone’s health and of our collective survival. From a time when it was referred to as tropical medicine and addressed issues concerning diseases in poverty-striken areas, the focus has increasingly shifted to cross-border health and good health as a human right.
Inflammation - research for a better daily life
Many common diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), psoriasis, allergy and asthma, are rooted in chronic inflammation. It causes a lifetime of suffering and a significant, and often invisible, disability. We still lack curative treatments for these diseases.
Neuroscience and mental health - focus on diseases of the brain
The brain, nerves and psyche are together one of Karolinska Institutet’s biggest research areas, and one where we in fact have a leading role in experimental neuroscience. Research is ongoing into nerve cells’ signaling systems and networks, how they develop from stem cells and what goes wrong when diseases develop.
Healthy aging - to find the right tools
Preventing age-related diseases and functional loss is an important challenge. We still do not know, for example, what happens when memory fails and dementia and Alzheimer's disease develop. More research is needed in order to develop a deeper understanding of the natural course of ageing, as well as risk and protective factors for various diseases.
Metabolic diseases - lifestyle related health challenges
Both in Sweden and throughout the world, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, heart failure and kidney failure are increasing - conditions that all involve much suffering and the risk of early death. By improving our understanding of molecules in each cell, we can identify biomarkers that predict the risk of developing metabolic diseases.
Reparative and regenerative medicine - stem cell repair
Karolinska Institutet conducts successful research in regenerative medicine and stem cells, with several strong research groups targeting a variety of disease areas. One example of an established and common stem cell treatment is bone marrow transplantation for leukaemia (blood cancer).
Inspiring research environments
New research environments allows us to deepen and improve our research, become even more internationally successful and attract new research talent from around the world.
Training future scientists and healthcare professionals
Karolinska Institutet offers the widest range of medical education in Sweden. Several of the programmes include clinical training or other training within the healthcare system.
