Nobel Calling 2025 at Karolinska Institutet
Every year in October, the recipients of the Nobel Prizes will be announced. In connection with this, the Nobel Prize Museum organizes inspirational events and instructive meetings in collaboration with, among others, Karolinska Institutet.
About the programme
The activities are open to the public and free of charge, but you will need to sign up in advance- You can find details and registration links under each activity below.

Research in jeopardy – and scientific breakthroughs
Panel debate, Monday 6 October, 18:00 – 19:00 at the Nobel Prize Museum.
We’re living in difficult times, researchers as much as anyone else. Academic freedoms are being encroached upon around the world and revolutionary discoveries of benefit to humankind are in danger of being postponed or even cancelled. How serious is this risk, what are its possible ramifications and what can we do to about it? The seminar is arranged by the Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institutet, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and the Swedish Research Council. Among the panellists will be KI’s vice-president, Martin Bergö. Welcome to this highly relevant discussion on how we can protect research in a troubled world.

The path to free abortion – an exposé on the struggle for the right to choose
Exhibition Friday 3 October 10:00 to Friday 17 October 16:00.
The Path to Free Abortion exhibition presents accounts compiled by Malin Clausson and Sandra in their book “50 år av fri abort 50 berättelser”. It covers political reforms, rulings and personal stories that led up to the 1975 Abortion Act. Meet some of the people who have gone through a termination and let them share with you the decisions and emotions that have shaped their lives.
Seminar Monday 13 October, 14:00 – 16:00.
50 years of the right to choose has impacted hugely on the availability of safe and accessible clinical abortions. Few things have meant so much for women’s individual rights and health in Sweden as the Abortion Act.
This year celebrates 50 years of the Abortion Act in Sweden – and 50 years of opposition to it. Today, anti-abortion sentiments are on the rise in the West. The Abortion Act gives women the right to decide on a termination up until the 18th week of pregnancy and has made it possible for researchers to improve the abortion procedure and make it safer, more accessible and more accepted. Welcome to our seminar on The path to free abortion – an exposé on the struggle for the right to choose.

Visit the Nordics largest Zebrafish facility
Tours scheduled for Monday 6 October, Tuesday 7 October and Thursday 9 October, 09:00 and 12:00.
Join one of our tours to see everything from the equipment we use, how we breed the fish and the research being done on them. What does a large animal research facility look like? How do we make sure the fish have the best possible lives? In what research fields are they used? How much can zebrafish actually contribute to the development of new drugs and the understanding of human disease?
See how the fish are bred from mating and fertilisation to adulthood, and peer down one of our many microscopes to observe the embryos and fry at different stages of development. Click here for further information and to register.

How developments in genetic engineering have affected us
Seminar and guided tour Tuesday 7 October, 16:00 – 18:00, The Cell, Forskaren Hagastaden.
Welcome to an afternoon at The Cellwhere we shed light on how developments in genetic engineering affect our values, decisions – and behaviour. In The Cell’s new exhibition, Me You We, you can see objects and art associated with human behaviour. One item you can learn the history of is the Ion Torrent Sequencer from 2012.

Clean water – healthy future
Seminar Wednesday 8 October, 13:00 – 15:00.
KI’s Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) welcomes you to seminar on fresh water. Clean drinking water is taken for granted in Sweden; indeed, we rarely think about the fact that we can drink fresh, healthy water straight from the tap without getting sick. At this seminar (page in Swedish), which you can attend in person or online, we’ll be presenting opportunities, challenges and the latest research from an environmental medicine perspective focusing on health, climate and environment.

Conference “Developing Brains” 2025
Wednesday 8 October, 09:00 – 18:00, Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institutet.
The “Developing Brains” conference will gather leading scientists to discuss how the immense complexity of the brain arises. Knowing how intricate brain structures are assembled gives not only crucial knowledge about the function of our bodies, but also how some of most common diseases arise.
