Improving public health monitoring by estimating the burden of disease

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project, we monitor the national burden of disease in Sweden and the importance of risk factors.

Data is continuously being collected from various Swedish sources and updated to feed into the database hosted by the Institute of Health and Metrics (IHME) in Seattle, USA.

We have a long history of collaborating with IHME as well as with GBD collaborators in the Nordic and European countries by comparing disease burden and policy using the GBD estimates.

At the core is exploring how to use Nordic registry data together with the GBD methods to strengthen and improve the estimates, and research is ongoing on how to estimate disease burden by socioeconomic position. We arrange regular Nordic Burden of Disease workshops. The goal is to strengthen the connection between IHME and Nordic collaborators in terms of integrating Nordic data into GBD analyses, to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the GBD and possibilities to help shape the models and methods used by the GBD.
