Advanced radiotherapy for rectal cancer – Alexander Valdman's team

We conduct clinical research focused on advanced radiotherapy for rectal cancer, with a particular emphasis on organ-preserving treatment for early-stage disease. By developing and evaluating local, individualised radiotherapy techniques, including contact brachytherapy as well as photon and proton therapy, we aim to reduce side effects and improve treatment outcomes. The goal is to enable more patients to be cured without surgery, while maintaining quality of life.

About our research

Our research aims to develop and evaluate new radiotherapy approaches for rectal cancer. The goal is to increase cure rates while reducing the risk of side effects and improving quality of life after treatment. Through clinical studies and methodological development, we work to make treatment more precise, personalised and less invasive.

Organ-preserving treatment

One of our main research areas is organ-preserving treatment for early-stage rectal cancer. Using advanced local radiotherapy, known as contact brachytherapy, high radiation doses can be delivered directly to the tumour while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. The aim is to enable more patients to avoid surgery and thereby preserve bowel function and quality of life. We are investigating how this approach can be implemented and further developed to make effective organ-preserving treatment available to more patients. Through the national randomised CORRECT trial, we are also exploring whether the treatment can be refined and improved further.

Proton therapy for locally advanced rectal cancer

We also conduct research on proton therapy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Protons and photons have different physical properties, which may make it possible to reduce radiation exposure to healthy organs and tissues. Through the national randomised PRORECT trial, we are investigating whether proton therapy can reduce side effects, improve quality of life and create better conditions for subsequent cancer treatment.

Precision radiotherapy and imaging

Another key area of our research is the development of methods for more accurate treatment planning and follow-up. Using advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we investigate how tumours can be delineated and characterised with greater precision. The aim is to improve the accuracy of radiotherapy, protect healthy tissue and enhance our ability to predict treatment response.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration between radiation oncologists, radiologists, medical physicists and surgeons, we aim to contribute to the next generation of rectal cancer treatment, where the goal is not only to cure the disease but also to preserve organ function and maintain patients’ quality of life.
