Hands-on workshop brought researchers together to explore wearable and mobile measurement technologies

The Network for Movement and Physical Function recently hosted a hands-on workshop at the uMOVE core facility, bringing together researchers from a range of disciplines and research backgrounds to explore technologies for measuring brain activity, movement and physical activity.
The workshop generated strong interest, with researchers having the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and gain practical experience with different measurement technologies. Following an introduction by David Moulaee Conradsson, participants took part in demonstrations and had the opportunity to try out the equipment themselves, exploring how different technologies can be used in research.

The practical demonstrations included:
- Brain activity: functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)
- Gait and functional movement: mobile motion analysis systems
- Physical activity: accelerometer-based measurements
The hands-on format allowed participants to move beyond theory and experience the technologies in practice – testing the equipment, discussing potential research applications and exchanging ideas across disciplines. The strong engagement from researchers with diverse backgrounds highlighted the broad interest in objective, mobile and innovative approaches to measuring movement and physical function, as well as the potential for collaboration across research areas.
The workshop was part of the Network for Movement and Physical Function's activities to facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration and access to expertise and infrastructure across Karolinska Institutet.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to an engaging afternoon of hands-on exploration and interdisciplinary exchange!
Movement and Physical Function Network Retreat in collaboration with Bone Hub, November 2025
The Network for Movement and Physical Function held its first retreat in collaboration with Bone Hub, sponsored by Promobilia on November 10 - 11, 2025 at Djurönäset Conference Center. In total, 66 participants attended, including ten keynote/oral presentations, one online keynote, and nine poster presentations.

Network for Movement and Physical Function: uMOVE conference and workshop June 10, 2025
The program offers keynotes and research lectures with guests from Brazil, USA and Greece, as well as from researchers connected to the uMove core facility.
We will also demonstrate three different measurement systems during hands-on workshops; fNIRS, APDM and Gaitrite.
