The job-exposure matrix (JEM) for physical workload consists of five different exposures regarding mechanical load on muscles and joints and load on the cardiorespiratory system: faster breathing due to heavy physical workload, working in forward bent posture, heavy lifting, working in kneeling or squatting and working with hands above shoulder level. It contains gender-specific exposure expressed in five categories of proportion of exposed workers within each occupation.
