Master degree education

China is a target country for recruiting talented students to KI. A number of activities are undertaken yearly to present available educational programmes, mainly at the master degree level and via KI global master degree programmes.

The following study programmes have bilateral exchange agreements with Chinese universities

For current agreements on student exchange and more information, search the map where all agreements can be found.

Doctoral education

China is the leading original country of KI’s foreign doctoral students. Over the last four decades, KI has educated approximately 500 PhDs originally from China. KI has a decentralized system for doctoral student recruitment, in which a doctoral supervisor and his/her department  decide when to recruit a doctoral student. Usually, Chinese students approach KI doctoral supervisors according to their research interests, and apply for an open doctoral position announced at the KI website. To be eligible for doctoral education, one must meet both the general och specific entry requirements for doctoral education.

Post doc training

The majority of the international researchers make ones post doc training at KI with individual initiative and without a formal agreement between KI and their home institutions. The activities take place between post doc and hosts/supervisors and are not centrally regulated.

All postdoctoral positions are located at KI's departments and most are also initiated from the departments. KI has no post doc training agreements at the university level with any Chinese university.

KI-CSC (China Scholarship Council programme)

KI-CSC programme is operated under a university level with the China Scholarship Council, which is a funding body of high education exchanges under the Ministry of Education of China. Currently, KI has decided to pause the call for 2023-2024 recruitment of the KI-CSC programme. KI is negotiating with CSC with regard to the exercution of the current KI-CSC agreement, as some content of the contract between CSC and its awardees has been questioned.

KI Alumni China Chapter

Karolinska Institutet has been a fertile academic ground for Chinese scholars and students. Over the last four decades, KI has trained a large number of biomedical researchers, doctoral and master-degree students originally from China. Many of these KI graduates have returned to China and work in academia and industry across the country. They have formed a strong KI Alumni Network in China and have established an active KI Alumni WeChat Group, which are important channels for networking for their career developments and maintaining warm links to KI. KI Alumni Relations Office har recently appointed five KI alumni ambassadors to promote KI's connection to the alumni and the networking among them.

Send a request to KI alumni ambassador Wenli "Claire" Ye (Email address: CLAIREywl@hotmail.com) to become a member of KI Alumni WeChat Group..
